Our Camping Philosophy

One common thread running through scouting programs is camping. Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts camp. We use camping to begin to teach the boys outdoor survival skills. We also use camping as a means to bring the entire family into the scouting program. Pack 49's camping is usually done as a family. We invite all family members, where appropriate, to attend our camps, including sisters, brothers, parents and grandparents.

We use organized activities to teach the boys, and a limited amount of free "exploring" time to help boys learn on their own.

Pack 49 camping also helps introduce the boys to the skills they will need while camping with Denison's Troop 55 as Webelos.

Finally, camping is a great way for Cub Scouts to meet new friends and make memories with their current friends. We encourage each boy to sign up for the council's day camp (which usually takes place the 2nd Saturday of June at Yellow Smoke Park), and at least one Council overnight camp each year. Most of our pack chooses to go to the "Fun with Son" camp at Little Sioux Scout Ranch (more on the ranch below); however, the Mid-America Council offers several other opportunities for summer and fall camping.

Pack 49 also has many day camps planned throughout the year for only our Pack, and hosted our first Family Pack camp this year. We usually do one overnight throughout the year, too. Past overnights have been at the SAC MuseumHenry Doorly Zoo, and the Science Center of Iowa. If you have any suggests for other educational and fun overnights, contact Christy or your leader.

Little Sioux Scout Ranch

From the council website...
The Little Sioux Scout Ranch is approximately one hour north of Omaha, Nebraska in Iowa's Loess Hills. The 1,800 acre ranch is approximately 15 minutes east of Interstate 29 off the Little Sioux exit (#95). Six hiking trails through narrow valleys and over steep hills offer a myriad of views of this pristine, heavily timbered ranch.

Campers have a choice of several mowed meadows, with nearby frost-free water hydrants and latrines or several remote campsites. Four cabin shelters are also available year-round to camping groups. A 15-acre lake is available for boating and fishing. A rifle range was recently added.

In 2000, the expansion of the Mutual of Omaha Administration Building was completed and 2002 marked the renovation of the shower house in north valley and the completion of the MidAmerican Energy Pavilion. This pavilion can accommodate seating for 300 at picnic tables. We plan to build an additional shower house.

We have just completed a major lakefront development project. For more details, see the link at the upper right for the related story.

Little Sioux is available for individual pack, troop and post activities, Order of the Arrow conclaves, as well as district and council camporees. During the summer, the ranch will hosts Pohuk Pride, a weeklong Junior Leader Training event; weekend sessions of Fun with Son (a one-day Cub Scout camp with optional overnight camping); and a two-day Cub Resident Camp. During September LSSR hosts a Webelos Sports Camp.
