Iowa Heritage Award

Pack 49's Iowa Heritage Award was designed to give youth recognition for learning about the heritage of our state, and being involved as a citizen of our county.


By completing the Iowa Heritage Award, it is hoped greater understanding and pride of our county will prevail. All requirements can be done with a unit, group, family, or individually.  Adults can also earn the award if they complete the requirements and assist a youth in earning the award.

 

A certificate can be awarded to all that successfully complete the award requirements:

  • Tell when the first settlers moved to Iowa.

  • Tell when Iowa was admitted into the United States.

  • Tell what the population of Iowa is.

  • Name the Governor of Iowa.

  • Name Iowa's two Senators.

  • Name our area's Representative. Tell how many United States Representatives Iowa has.

  • Describe or draw a picture of our state flag. When was the state flag adopted?

  • Name Iowa's state flower, rock, bird, and tree.

  • Name Iowa's motto. Write or tell what it means to you.

  • Learn at a minimum the first verse of the official song of the state of Iowa.

  • Tell how many state capitols Iowa has had, and where they were/are located.

  • Tell what is special about Iowa's state capitol building, and when it was completed.

  • Tell how many times Iowa's dome as been regilded and the cost of each time. Also describe what the term "gilded" means.

  • Name 10 famous Iowans, including at least one in each of the following categories: artist, scientist, athlete, actor, President of the United States, businessman, and military hero.

  • Name two businesses based in Iowa.

  • Name five items that can be made from Iowa's corn or soybeans.

  • Name all three state colleges in Iowa.

  • Name three other colleges, universities, or community colleges in Iowa.

  • Name what is pictured on Iowa's quarter.

  • Write a story or poem, or draw a picture, about living in Iowa.

  • Donate at least one hour in a community service project for the county.

Cub Scouts throughout the United States can earn this award. Fill out the form and send it with a self-addressed, stamped 9x12 envelope, along with $1.00 for each certificate requested to: Assistant Cubmaster, Pack 49; 1315 4th Ave South; Denison, Iowa 51442.
