Why we promote community service
Simply put, we do our best to help others through service
because that is what a Cub Scout does, and it is in our Promise,
"I promise to do my best, to do my duty to God and my country,
to help other people, and to obey the Law of the Pack."
Teaching boys to serve the community also helps instill most
of Cub Scoutings Core Values: Citizenship, Compassion,
Cooperation, Courage, Faith, Health & Fitness, Honesty,
Perseverance, Positive Attitude, Resourcefulness, Respect, and
Responsibility. These are values that we hope our Cub Scouts
will carry with them throughout their lives to serve each
community where they live.
How we serve the community
Pack 49 serves the community several ways.
We participate as flag bearers in community celebrations and
parades. Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in Denison are also often
asked to do the honors of raising the flag of the United States
of America, and to lead the pledge of allegiance. Check out our
photo gallery of Scouts in action
doing this.
We also participate in the annual Scouting for Food. In 2005,
for the first year, we combined forces with Denison's Troop 55
and Girl Scouts to host a chili supper for Scouting for Food.
People were asked to either give a free will offering or donate
food for Denison's Temporary Aid Program (TAP). The scouts
collected a whopping 654 items, and raised $545.50 for TAP, who
were thrilled with our results. Check out our
photo gallery of this event.
The Cub Scouts have also adopted a section of road to clean,
and will be taking a Saturday in the fall and one in the spring
to help clean the ditches to keep Iowa beautiful.
In addition to these Pack community service, Dens also
practice community service as part of their programs, and
individual scouts serve the community.
